It is easy to use and I have gotten about 1/2 through my b/w negatives. Lots of color negatives to go. The quality is better than my photography & development skills. I think I would have liked a focus mechanism but maybe that would add too much expense. The price was one of the reason I chose this product. Actually the biggest issue which I haven't really figured out how to handle is the date and file naming. The date should reflect the current date rather than defaulting some arbitrary date in the past. The file naming is a problem if I upload to my PC in the same file directory. If I use an SD drive without all the previous scans on it will repeat their filenames. That's because it starts out on the default beginning date on an empty disc. If the device could hold the current date then file naming would follow the date, like on my camera. Once again I don't know if this would increase the cost I could just download to separate folders on my PC and rename there.

  2. works well, once you figure it out 0 people found this helpful

I got the FS51, and had loads of trouble with it. Basically, it didn't work, and ended up not even turning on. Magnasonic was very responsive with supplying UPS return, and sending out a new one. The new one works well. I'm using it for 35mm slides. The process is pretty fast. Takes about five seconds per slide to do the scan. The scan quality looks very good.I should say that the 64MB internal memory is woefully inadequate. You'll be about to scan about 14 pictures onto it. First thing to do is to run out and get a 32GB SD card to vastly expand that memory. With a 32GB card, you can stuff about 7000 scans into the thing. Now, those SD cards are really pretty cheap. Why couldn't Magnasonic have included that memory internally? Now, the manual is pretty bad. They don't say things that need to be said. For one, you cannot scan to your computer. You scan to the internal memory and THEN you download the folder of scanned pictures to your computer. You can do everything with the USB cable - power and download. You just can't download as you scan. There are text readouts on the screen that the manual simply never refers to. Duh? I should add that there is an engineering defect, where the SD card doesn't slide in easily. You have to push it hard to get it in, and it certainly doesn't pop right out like it's supposed to. Both my original unit and the replacement were identical in that regard. They include a brush for cleaning the sensor, but no instructions on how to use it. Now, the support people are pretty responsive, so if you have questions, ask them. But once you figure all that out, things go pretty fast and painlessly. Diddling with the color balance and brightness of pictures is a slow process, but I rarely needed to do that. Be aware that the slides are only scanned in landscape mode. So if you have portrait mode pictures, you'll have to flip them after downloading them.

  3. works well, finally 0 people found this helpful

Pretty good. Digitized slides look high quality. Operations manual is very thin, however. Not at all clear from the manual, but you CAN'T scan directly to files on the computer. You can connect the the computer, but ONLY to download the slides you scanned to internal memory. Now, the internal memory is very small. Only about 14 pictures worth. First thing you'll want to do is to get an SD card to expand that. Really strange that Magnasonic can't put in a few tens of gigs of memory. That would be a minor addition to the cost, and would make, out-of-the-box, a MUCH better device. There is text on the LCD screen, but the manual doesn't tell you what that text is. Weird. The SD card doesn't slide in or out easily, you have to push and pull on it kind of hard. You can delete images when in "Playback mode", but that mode is never defined in the manual. There is a brush that comes with the device, presumably for cleaning it, but there are no instructions about how to use it. When I first got this scanner, things failed miserably. They were prompt about giving me the option to refund or replace (and also answering questions about it), and I chose the latter. The new one works well. It was frustrating, but now I'm satisfied.

  4. Great Affordable Product! 0 people found this helpful

I am the family historian and hold what remains of my family's photos and slides. I want to preserve them and donate them to my hometown's historical society. There are so many different types of media to preserve and this seems to suit the needs of an amateur like me. I have only tested it out on slides so far, but I'm sure once I take the time to RTFM, I will like it even more. The picture is my first attempt to scan a 50+ year old slide, right out of the box, without reading any instructions! My only complaints are that the material used is lightweight and the device seems cheap, and that the viewer is too small for me to be very effective. I do like that I have everything I need for viewing what I'm doing on a larger screen and that you can scan to a memory card without even needing to involve a computer!

  5. WORKS WELL 0 people found this helpful

The scanner works well after a short learning experience. The Magnasonic chat help was good and once you learn the ins and outs you can scan quickly. The digital files are not huge since they are Jpegs but with a good Photo editing program decent prints can be made. This scanner seems similar to some of the other scanners and what you can expect in this price range. the benefit is that scanning is quick. A more expensive scanner gives better scans but are hard to find and much slower. all in all a pretty good experience
