Upgraded from the Edifier r1280t to these. Paired them with a Cerwin Vega and a pioneer receiver.

My girlfriend loves them.

I ran the auto-calibration on my receiver and didn't notice it automatically identified them as "Large" speakers, meaning they provided enough bass for the receiver to think they were floorstanding speakers with integrated subwoofers.

The thing is, when the setting for the front speakers is at "Large", it completely disables the sub and run the whole range of frequencies to the front speakers. It took me longer than it should have to figure this out since I didn't feel like some of the bass was missing in any movies or music I was enjoying.

I recommand setting them up with a subwoofer, but I think you can definitely enjoy them without one, especially in an apartment.
